How to Apostille a Birth Certificate in Florida: Cost, Office, Timing

A Florida birth certificate apostille costs ten dollars per document, and the walk-in counter in Tallahassee finishes most requests while you wait. There is no county clerk step between a Florida vital record and the state certificate, which makes Florida one of the shorter chains in the country. The work is front-loaded into getting the right copy.

A notary commission is not one business. It’s five.

An apostille is a certificate a state office attaches to a document so countries in the Apostille Convention will accept it. The background is in our apostille explainer.

Start With the Right Copy

The birth certificate must be an original certified copy, and for Florida vital records that means a certificate issued by the state’s vital records office bearing the State Registrar’s signature. A photocopy, a scan, or a hospital souvenir version fails immediately. Florida’s certification office authenticates public officials’ signatures, so the signature on the certified copy is the thing being verified from the start.

Florida publishes no freshness window for apostille requests on its own pages. The destination country may want a recently issued certificate regardless, so confirm that expectation before deciding whether an older certified copy can make the trip.

The Apostille Step

Florida’s apostilles are issued by the Department of State’s Division of Corporations, the office that also runs Sunbiz. The counter is at 2415 N. Monroe Street, Suite 810, Tallahassee, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. No appointments; walk-ins finish most requests while you wait.

The fee is ten dollars per document for a standard apostille. One distinction matters on the fee sheet: documents already certified by a Florida Clerk of Court, court records and the like, cost twenty dollars, because the state issues both a Certificate of Incumbency and the apostille for those. A plain vital record stays at ten.

By mail, requests are processed in the order received with no published turnaround, payment by check or money order only, no cash or credit cards, and a self-addressed stamped envelope or prepaid airbill comes back out the door with the certificate. In person is the fast path, and for anyone within driving distance of Tallahassee it is not a close call.

What Does Not Work Here

The Florida office authenticates Florida signatures. An out-of-state birth certificate goes to that state’s process. A Consular Report of Birth Abroad is a federal document for the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications. And for destinations outside the Apostille Convention, Florida issues a notarial certification rather than an apostille, with the destination country’s embassy legalization as a separate step.

No, not for a state-issued vital record. The certified copy goes directly to the Department of State’s certification office.
